Whether you’re cruising in a car with the air conditioning humming or zipping along the coastline on a scooter, driving here is an adventure in itself. But like any adventure, it comes with its own rules.
Better roads, but not perfect
Every summer, teams of construction workers repair another section of the island’s road network. Cracked asphalt is patched, potholes are filled, and new stretches of smooth blacktop appear where once there were bone-rattling bumps. The good news? Driving in Koh Phangan is much safer today than it was just a few years ago.
But this is still an island in the Gulf of Thailand – don’t expect silky highways! Many roads remain narrow, with sharp turns hugging steep jungle hillsides. After heavy rain, surfaces can be slippery, and loose gravel can appear without warning. Take it easy, especially if you’re not used to tropical roads. A holiday in paradise isn’t worth rushing for.
The charm – and challenge – of island driving
Driving here isn’t just about getting from A to B. It’s about the journey. You’ll wind past coconut groves, cross sleepy fishing villages, and climb hills that reward you with jaw-dropping views of turquoise bays and golden sunsets. But those same climbs can be tough on both vehicles and nerves, especially for scooter beginners.
Steep hills and hairpin bends are common, particularly if you’re heading to the east coast or the quieter northern beaches. Go slow, keep both hands firmly on the handlebars or wheel, and never underestimate how fast a downhill slope can get away from you.
Rules of the road (and local habits!)

Drive on the left – Thailand follows left-hand traffic, so keep left at all times and overtake on the right.

Watch out for locals – Expect everything from pickup trucks loaded with coconuts to kids on bicycles. Locals know the roads like the back of their hand and sometimes drive fast; let them pass.

Rain changes everything – Tropical showers can turn a harmless slope into a slippery slide. Slow right down after rain, especially on hills.

Don’t drink and drive – Seems obvious, but accidents involving scooters and alcohol are sadly common on the island.
Where you can (and can’t) go
Not all roads are created equal.

Most main roads connecting Thong Sala, Haad Rin, and the northern beaches are easy and well-maintained.

Some backroads to hidden beaches or jungle viewpoints are only for experienced riders – they can be steep dirt tracks with loose gravel.

Thong Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi have decent roads, but expect tight corners and slow-moving traffic in the village areas.
